Teapot Dome Service Station

Name: Teapot Dome Service Station

Archive ID#: WA3292

Description: This little gas station was built in 1922, a commentary on the Teapot Dome scandal involving President Harding and a federal petroleum reserve in Wyoming (the reserve still exists, operated by the Department of Energy and Fluor Daniel, Inc.). Said to be the oldest gas station in use in the country, it survived partially because it was moved years ago, to be closer to the interstate. Washington is also said to be the birthplace of gas stations, and a plaque marking the site of the nation's first filling station can be found in Seattle's Waterfront Park.
