Whidbey Island Naval Air Station

Name: Whidbey Island Naval Air Station
Category: Military
Archive ID#: WA3158

Description: Whidbey is the only Naval Air Station in the Northwest, and is homebase to aircraft carrier planes such as the A-6 Intruder, made by Grumman, an attack jet that sails on the carriers of the Pacific Fleet. Electronic jamming aircraft also are based out of Whidbey. Other military tenants on the base include the generically named "Naval Facility" at Building 2700, which operates a classified worldwide network of underwater surveillance systems. The Naval Air Station is spread out across the island - the main base is at Ault Field, the Seaplane Base is five miles south at Oak Harbor, and the simulated aircraft carrier landing field is south of Coupeville. Live ordnance training is conducted at the Boardman Bombing Range in eastern Oregon.
