Bethlehem Steel Plant

Name: Bethlehem Steel Plant
Category: Industrial
Archive ID#: PA3128

Description: The legendary steel mill in Bethlehem is one of the most dramatic abandoned industrial landscapes in the country, and portions of the 200 acre complex will soon be developed into the National Museum of Industrial History', an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution, scheduled to open by 2005. Steel is still processed in some buildings on the edge of the site, employing around 2,000 people at a facility which shapes steel that is manufactured elsewhere. While still a significant operation, this is a tiny fraction of the 30,000 people that once worked here (during WWII), and the several thousand that worked here until the late 1980's. This historic plant, established in 1857 produced structural steel for the Golden Gate Bridge, Rockefeller Center, and many other landmarks, before shutting down the blast furnaces in 1994. Bethlehem Steel remains the nation's second largest integrated steel producer with revenues of about $4.2 billion in 2000, with steel manufactured primarily at its plants in Burns Harbor, IN, and Sparrows Point, MD.
