| A museum about the Arkansas River, and the multi-billion dollar waterway engineering project that opened the landlocked city of Tulsa up to commercial barge shipping. In 1971, the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System opened, composed of 450 miles of rivers, mostly the Arkansas, that were dredged, leveed, locked, and dammed by the Army Corps of Engineers, to connect the Mississippi River to Tulsa. Products shipped on the system, which links the southern plains to the Atlantic Ocean, include millions of tons of chemical fertilizers and farm products. The exhibits at the museum include an operating scale model of a McClellan-Kerr Waterway lock and dam. Other historical displays focus on the Arkansas River, which starts in Leadville Colorado, and grows across 1,450 miles of the plains states to the Mississippi River. |
