|
|
| Mount Rumpke is a megafill, one of the largest landfills in the nation. It was started in 1945, and grows by 2 million tons of household and industrial wastes per year. A large landslide occurred in 1996, when the north face of the mound cracked, then slumped downward, churning and exposing 15 acres of buried waste. The gash was slowly filled in, and the company was fined $1miilion. In 2005 the dump was permitted too expand by another 300 acres, and isn?t expected to be declared full until 2022. |
