Brookhaven National Laboratory
|
|
| A diversified federal R&D lab, involved in energy research, biomedical research and environmental science research, and one of the major particle accelerator facilities in the country. Established after WWII, Brookhaven was founded as part of the Department of Energy's nuclear and weapons systems lab complex, though its mission has changed over the years to include more research with commercial applications. The complex is located on 5,265 acres and employs around 3,300 employees (650 of which hold Ph.D's). The lab has been operated by Associated Universities, Inc., a consortium of 26 universities, since opening in 1947. A leakage of tritium into the soil of the lab's grounds was discovered in 1997, and a temporary cease in operations was ordered by the Federal Energy Secretary. |
