Description: Open pit copper mines cover this area, surrounding the company town of Ruth, including one of the largest pits in the state: the Liberty Pit. The tailings are still being worked, though digging in the pits is largely terminated. The operator of the mine is BHP, an Australian resources conglomerate. The smelter for this mining district was located in McGill, until operations ceased there in the 1980's.
