Description: Army's cold weather and freezing-effects lab. The main laboratory contains 24 coldrooms that can be operated at temperatures as low as -50 degrees F or -45 degrees C, a computer center, chem labs, a cleanroom complex, an electron microscope lab, a soils lab, a machine shop, and an electronics lab. In addition to the main lab, much of CRREL's research takes place in dedicated facilities, including the Ice Engineering Facility, and the Frost Effects Research Facility. Facilities in Hanover also include a ballistics building, a greenhouse, a deep refrigerated well for testing ice drills, wastewater treatment cells, an experimental sludge freezing faciility, a saline ice test facility, and a pavement testing building. CRREL maintains an Alaskan Projects Office at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks as well as a field station located about 3 miles to the northeast.
