Millstone Nuclear Power Plants

Name: Millstone Nuclear Power Plants
Category: Nuclear / Radioactive
Archive ID#: CT3131

Description: This complex of three nuclear power plants, Millstone reactor numbers 1, 2, and 3, constitute New England's largest electrical generating facility, when they operate. Millstone 1, built during 1966 and 1970, shut down in 1995 and is slated to be decommissioned. The other reactors went online in 1975 and 1986 and have been sitting idle since 1996, due to safety concerns raised by workers at the plant, which led to the largest civil penalty ever assessed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, $2.1 million, against the former operator, Northeast Utilities.
