Royal Gorge Bridge

Name: Royal Gorge Bridge
Category: Water
Archive ID#: CO3161

Description: This suspension bridge, over the deep Royal Gorge in the Arkansas River, is said to be the highest bridge in the world, at 1,053 feet above the water level, and was constructed in six months in 1929. Today, the bridge is somewhat overwhelmed by the tourism industry surrounding it. Several western theme towns, gift shoppes and other attractions line the road to the gorge, and the bridge itself has tourist complexes on either end, with restaurants, rides, an aerial tramway, and shops.
Location: Fifteen miles NW of Canon City
Address: CO
Visitor Info: While it is not permitted to walk or drive on the bridge without paying an admission price to the tourist park (around $15.00), a good view of the bridge and the gorge can be had for free near the parking lot just outside the gateway. If you arrive after the park has closed but before dark, the fee for driving over the bridge is around $5.00, but the road out is gated, so you have to return the same way you came in.
