Victorville Federal Prison

Name: Victorville Federal Prison
Category: Cultural
Archive ID#: CA3344

Description: A federal prison, built in 2000, across from George Air Force Base, which closed a few years ago (and is now Southern California Logistics Airport). Victorville is a medium security prison with over 1,000 inmates. It is common to find federal prisons next to military bases (as at Vandeberg and Nellis Air Force Bases), built on exisitng federal property. In the case of the new Victorville Prison, the closure of George in the early 1990's created an economic vacuum that brought the prison. It is home to John Walker Lindh, the 'American Taliban."
