Club Ed

Name: Club Ed
Category: Cultural
Archive ID#: CA3272

Description: Travelers on 150th Street East, in the open desert east of Lancaster, might imagine they are approaching such a place, despite the unlikely location (Route 66 never came near here - 150th Street is part of a grid carved out of the desert as part of development plans for subdividing the Antelope Valley). In fact, what they are approaching is one of several motel/gas station/diner film sets in the area, a place called "Club Ed" which was built from scratch for a Dennis Hopper film (Eye of the Storm) in 1990. Instead of striking the set after filming was completed, the set was bought and has been  used as a desert location and production services center ever since. Because of Club Ed, 150th Street is said to be the most-filmed desert road, and appears in numerous television commercials.
