Miramar Marine Corps Air Station
|
|
| Miramar used to be the "Top Gun" base for training Navy fighter pilots, until the Marine Corps took it over in the mid 1990's, after loosing the two Marine Corps air stations in Orange County (El Toro and Tustin). Top Gun moved to Fallon, Nevada, and now Miramar is the west coast center for the Marines "air power." Fighters, heavy lifters, helicopters, and reconnaissance aircraft are based here, conducting around 200,000 sorties per year. The 24,000 acre base on the outskirts of San Diego, employs over 12,000 people. |
