Port of Oakland

Name: Port of Oakland
Category: Water
Archive ID#: CA3065

Description: Oakland is said to be the fifth most active port in the United States, and the second largest container port (after Los Angeles/Long Beach) on the West Coast, due in large part to Oakland being the western terminus for major transcontinental railways. A major expansion of the port is currently taking place, using land freed up from the closure of Navy and Army supply bases in the port area. The dock terminal areas are being dredged to a depth of 50 feet to accommodate a new generation of larger container ships, and more container cranes are being added (there are over 30 now), rail lines are being re-routed, and new expanses of pavement are being laid for more container storage. The Sea-Land Company was the first shipping company to adopt the container cargo system that transformed the international shipping industry, and Oakland was the first West Coast port to transfer to this method, in 1962.

Visitor Info: Maritime Street, marked as an exit off Interstate 80, on the east side of the Bay Bridge, may be the best artery into this labyrinth of chain link, asphalt, and metal shipping containers. It intersects with 7th Street and west on 7th heads out to Portview Park. The park has recently been renovated, and has a visitors center and a playground. This park will be expanded as port construction progresses, eventually extending east along the shore, and connecting to a larger park along the edge of the former Naval Supply Center.
